Infirmary

Francis Frith 07/10/1822 - 25/02/1898

Summary

A corner view of the Infirmary, Manchester. The statue of the Duke of Wellington provides the focal point, and two lamp posts are also in the foreground. The benches around the perimeter of the infirmary garden are nearly deserted: the photograph must have been taken very early on a summer morning, as this was a busy area in the daytime. The infirmary, an imposing neoclassical building with a domed central tower and porticoed entrances, was demolished in 1909: this site is now Piccadilly Gardens.
