Victoria Hotel
Francis Frith 07/10/1822 - 25/02/1898
Summary
The Victoria Hotel is on the left: it is a large Victorian commercial-gothic building, surmounted by a round tower. Before it stands a statue of Oliver Cromwell, facing away from us. To the right of the image is a view down Deansgate, one of the principal streets of Manchester: it is not crowded; only a single horse-drawn tram is visible in the distance. Other buildings in the nineteenth-century Manchester-Venetian vein line Deansgate opposite the hotel. The Victoria Hotel, later called Victoria Buildings, was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1940 and subsequently demolished.
