Design for a Lunette: A Saint Pointing to a Skull

Frederic James Shields 1833 - 1911

Summary

A seated male figure turns slightly to the left and points upward his outstretched left hand and downwards with his right which crosses his body. His right hand points to a broken skull lying on its side next to his left foot. The figure wears a cape and robe of heavy drapery and has a headdress over his long hair. A halo surrounds his head and his face which has a long white beard is set in a grave, determined expression. Leaning over the figure's right shoulder is a winged angel who appears to be whispering into his ear. This angel is also dressed in robes and holds a trumpet in its right hand. To the right of the composition are two heavenly putti, babies disembodied heads surrounded by six wings.
