The Plague of London: Imprisoned Family Escaping

Frederic James Shields 1833 - 1911

Summary

A man, woman and child emerge out a house laden down with baggage. The male figure leads the way down the remains of their house door, which now functions as a ramp from the doorstep, crushing beneath it the body of a man who has a bullet wound to his head; the male figure carries a pistol in his hand and a package on his back, as he strides forward and turns his head back to look at the woman and child behind. The woman stands at the doorway of the house, carrying a few small bundles, with a young child cowering behind, clinging to her skirts. An axe lies beside the door which has holes torn into it and a key in the lock.
