The Plague of London: Solomon Eagle Denouncing the Impenitent
Frederic James Shields 1833 - 1911
Summary
Street scene, showing the semi-nude figure of Solomon Eagle (a religious fanatic who saw the plague as a sign of divine judgement) wearing only a burning charcoal grate on his head and a loincloth. As he stands astride a narrow, cobbled street, with his long hair trailing down his back, he turns round and gesticulates with his arms at a group of three young women, who lean out of a ground-floor window to the right as a comet trails across the night sky.
