Y Son Fieras (And they are like wild beasts)

Francisco Goya Y Lucientes 1746 - 1828

Summary

A group of women face to the right, and a group of men in uniform face to the left. They are attacking each other. Women are armed with stones, knives and what seems to be a spear, while soldiers hold swords and guns. In the foreground, a woman carries a baby under her left arm, placing the child behind her back, and a long stick or a spear in her right hand, using the weight of her body to charge at one of the soldiers in the foreground. He faces forward and holds his left hand up in the air as his body twists back and to one side. In the middle ground to the left, one woman lies down with a knife in her right hand and another holds a large rock above her head with her elbows bent. To the right, a soldier aims at the crowd.
