Summary

A portrait of an elderly man in an ornate frame. The subject is wearing seventeenth century dress with a close fitting cap and large chain with a figurative pendent. The frame is decorated with an infant merman to the lower left holding a trident. There is a sea battle scene with two ships to the lower right. The frame is inscribed "CHARLES HOWARD EARL OF NOTTINGHAM".
