Gartside Street, Manchester
Arthur Sherwood Edwards 1887 - 1960
Summary
In the centre of the image is a building in ruins surrounded by rubble. Houses can be seen in the background on the left and right hand side. The drawing appears rapidly made, using thick, bold pencil strokes. Manchester was particularly severely bombed by the Luftwaffe in late December 1940. This image may be of some of the destruction resulting from this 'Christmas blitz'. Edwards was an architect and sculptor who worked for Manchester City Council’s Architects Department.
