Old Farm, Probably in the Neighbourhood of Ancoats.

Old Farm, Probably in the Neighbourhood of Ancoats.

Summary

Rural scene, looking across water and a narrow strip of pasture land to a house with a tiled roof and two projecting gables. Behind the house, between the gabled projections, is a bushy garden. Two cows lie on the grass, and a third drinks at the pool or river in the immediate foreground. This is a soft crayon lithograph, and there are no straight or harsh lines, which adds a quality of gentleness to the image. Written beneath the image in pencil is the speculation that this farm is in the Ancoats neighbourhood - a district of Manchester known in the mid-to-late nineteenth century for its heavy industrialisation.
