Summary

Italian scene depicting a castle high up on a hill, upon which it looks down over a hazy landscape. Below the castle, to the left, a river runs towards a stone bridge and a small building in the centre of the composition. On the bank of the river, close to the bridge, a herd of cattle stand grazing. In the foreground, a horse drawn cart and a family rest beneath a copse of trees; two dogs chase one another beside a mother and child. In the background to the right, more trees are visible and a house in the centre. In the far distance, a mountain range can be seen beyond the haze.
