River with a rowing boat

Rembrandt van Rijn (attributed to) 1606 - 1669

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Rembrandt. The drawing shows a river scene with a large house and tree on the bank on the right side. There is a small jetty at the right edge and a figure in a rowing boat in the centre foreground. The riverbank on the left is grassy and more buildings and trees can be seen in the background on the left. Text in the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 22 REMBRANDT (b. 1606; d. 1669) RIVER WITH A ROWING BOAT Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth. From the Collection of N. A. Flinck. Pen and bistre, and bistre wash. 13.3 x 20 cm. (5 1/4 x 7 7/8 in.). The view is probably taken on the Amstel just outside Amsterdam, in the same locality as the drawing reproduced by the Vasari Society, IV. 25. The obelisk (one of the old boundary stones of Amsterdam) is like that which occurs in an etching of about 1650 (B. 227). A. M. H"
