Summary

A half-length portrait of Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653), cloth merchant of Lancashire and founder of Chetham's Hospital / School. Chetham wears a short pointed beard and a narrow moustache. He holds his gloves in one hand, wears robes and a ruff, and an embroidered cap on his head. His gaze is serious and piercing. This is an early twentieth-century copy of a print (see accession number 1947.162 in the Manchester Art Gallery collection). It retains its mount from 1925, which also displays biographical information about the sitter. This work used to hang in the Horsfall Museum, Ancoats, Manchester, an educational museum in what was a densely-populated working class district.
