Heath

Summary

A half-length portrait of Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653), cloth merchant of Lancashire and founder of Chetham's Hospital / School. Chetham wairs a short pointed beard and a narrow moustache. He holds his gloves in one hand, wears robes and a ruff, and an embroidered cap on his head. His gaze is serious and piercing. The image is made using a stipple technique, meaning it is composed of tiny printed dots, which tempers the sitter's severity with a certain softness.
