PICTURAE RAPHAELIS SANCTIJ URBINATIS / EX AULA ET CONCLAVIBUS PALATIJ VATICANI. [Title page]
Raphael (after) 1483 - 6 Apr 1520
Summary
A scroll contains a declaration in Latin regarding a picture from the Vatican by Rapael. The scroll is held open by four figures depicted at each corner of the print. At the top two corners, two nude male angels with wings have their arms raised above their heads and are modestly covered by a swag of drapery. They stand on plinths in front of which two seated female figures sit in classical robes. The female figure on the left is a personification of Religion who holds two documents. The figure on the right is a personification of Justice who holds a set of scales in her left hand and a goose' neck in her right. The vatican seal is in the front centre of the engraving with dedication to Pope Innocent XIII. 1722. This is the title-page to Picturae Raphaelis Sanctij Urbinatis, a series of prints which show paintings by Raphael for the Vatican stanze - Sala di Constantino, Stanza d'Eliodoro, Stanza della Segnatura and Stanza dell'Incendio. Engraving.
