Summary
Portrait of John Crewe (1772-1835) aged three, dressed up as Henry VIII in the style of the portrait of Henry VIII by Hans Holbein. In an interior, with spaniels at Crewe’s feet, and a view of a landscape through the window in the upper right. After a painting in a private collection on long term loan to Tate Britain. John Crewe was the son of John Crewe (1742-1829) a wealthy Whig politiican who became 1st Baron Crewe of Crewe Hall in 1806. His mother, the political hostess Frances Anne Crewe, is the sitter in 1920.345. Crewe later married Henrietta Maria Anna Walker-Hungerford, heiress to a substantial fortune derived from her father's family's Barbados sugar plantations. Following the abolition of slavery in 1833, Crewe received compensation by Parliament for the loss of his "property" at Four Hills and The Rock, sugar plantation estates on Barbados that he acquired following the death of his wife.
