A woman with a glass of wine, and a man looking at her

Philips de Koninck 1619 - 1688

Summary

The woman's flushed cheeks, knowing smile and obscene gesture are beautifully observed. Her extended forefinger leaves little to the imagination, although the broader nature of her relationship with the man peering down at her through the window is not clear. The head of a second man is just visible in the shadows at the far right. Her legs are apart, one foot resting on a foot warmer, whose open front suggests her availability. By her side is a plate of oysters, a well-known aphrodisiac. In the 1600s Koninck painted many scenes of everyday life, although he is better known for his panoramic views of the Dutch landscape.

A woman with a glass of wine 1649 Philips Koninck 1619-88 Oil on panel The woman’s pink cheeks and bemused smile, as well as her contemptuous gesture, are beautifully observed. We can only imagine the exchange between her and the man who leers at her out of the window. The head of a second man is just visible in the shadows at the far right. In the 1600s Koninck painted many scenes of everyday life but today he is better known for his panoramic views of the Dutch landscape, also displayed in this exhibition.
