Classical Landscape with a River
Summary
The setting for this painting is an area of dense woods and rocky outcrops at the edge of a lake. A man stands on the bank in the foreground, leaning on a stick or oar, while another kneels in a narrow boat moored alongside. A third figure sits on a grassy bank beyond. Animals graze at the water's edge on the far bank. There is a vista to hills beyond and a bright, cloudy sky. The composition and the trees recall the work of Bartelomeo Torreggiani (1590-after 1675), such as Gorge with Peasants Fishing and Bandits.
