A three-quarter length portrait of Mrs Shafto Clarke and her young daughter, positioned against a landscape setting. Mrs Clarke is dressed in white with a white band about her fair hair and sits with a large book resting on her lap, her head turned to the right. Standing at her right side and also dressed in white with darker short hair, her young daughter rests one hand on her mother's arm, turning her head to face the viewer.
