Self-portrait in a Mirror

John Randall Bratby 1928 - 1992

Summary

Thickly painted, self-portrait of the artist John Bratby. Depicted at work, Bratby's image is viewed through a mirror; he stands at an easel, right arm outstretched towards a canvas, wearing thick rimmed glasses and a cigarette in his mouth. A number of bottles stand on a table in front of the mirror. According to a letter to the gallery dated 15 March 1982 from the artist, Self-portrait in a Mirror was painted at Carlisle Art School between September 1955 and May 1956. The self-portrait was done in the evenings in the empty painting school class room.
