Bethnal Green Allotment

Charles Ginner 04/03/1878 - 6/01/1952

Summary

A view of a Bethnal Green allotment, hidden amongst tall redbrick industrial buildings and houses. A stone pathway cuts through vegetable patches planted in rows. A single man is visible against the far wall, kneeling down and digging his patch. In the immediate foreground to the right, a Union Jack hangs from the side of a wooden shed. The precise style of painting adds to the regimented feeling of the allotment. Celebrating the 'Dig for Victory' campaign, a flag flutters patriotically from a garden shed and a couple of roses peep defiantly from amongst the functional rows of cabbages, beans and sprouts.
