Mars Appeals to Vulcan
Sir Frank Brangwyn 1867 - 1956
Summary
A proof before lettering for the poster 'Mars Appeals to Vulcan' designed to recruit volunteers to fight at the Front during World War I. A labourer is seated on the ground, facing right, he is wearing a cap and is looking down. He appears exhausted. Behind him there are two standing figures. The workman on the left holds the handle of a large hammer. He represents Vulcan, a talented blacksmith God. The figure to his right dressed in Roman armour with crested helmet is a personification of Vulcan's brother, Mars, the Roman God of War. He points to a column of British soldiers marching past. 'Mars' is encouraging 'Vulcan' to supply weapons for these troops. Damaged houses can be seen in the background. The poster was published by the Daily Chronicle, a newspaper printed 1872-1930. It was printed by the Avenue Press.
