A Provencal Fountain
Henry Herbert La Thangue 1859 - 1929
Summary
A view along a wide avenue in a sleepy Provence town. Trees line the side of the road, and birds (pigeons?) wander amongst the cobblestones. In the foreground to the left a large stone fountain, with water shooting out of two lion's head-shaped spouts into a circular shallow pool. On the extreme left, under the shade of the trees, a woman leans towards the fountain's spout filling a jar with water. The leaves on the trees are brown and the ground is scattered with leaves on this bright autumn day.
