Lyme Regis

Richard Ernst Eurich 1903 - 1992

Summary

View along the shore at Lyme Regis in Dorset, seen from a steep grassy bank above the beach. A young woman and child sit together, the mother is looking out to sea and the child is looking towards the viewer. An empty rowing boat and small tent can be seen on the beach below and gentle waves lap the shore. Houses and white stone walls are visible in the centre and background, and in the far distance, green hills and trees line the horizon. Some parts of the house in the foreground are semi-dilapidated, with brick showing through the white exterior, showing the age of some of these properties. Richard Ernst Eurich was born in Bradford and educated at Bradford Grammar School. From 1902 to 1904 he studied at Bradford School of Arts and Crafts and later at the Slade School of Art in London from 1924 to 1926. He settled in the south after studying at the Slade. His first solo exhibition was held at the Goupil Gallery, London, in 1929. On that occasion he met the artist Christopher Wood who probably influenced him to "paint what you love" which for him was always to be the sea. Marine, coastal and harbour subjects became Eurich's main subject matter from the 1930s onwards.
