Cookham Moor

Sir Stanley Spencer 30/6/1891 - 14/12/1959

Summary

A landscape painting depicting Cookham Moor, the viewer is positioned looking towards Cookham Moor from a small bridge. Cookham Moor contains a War Memorial at the end of the High Street, as well as wooded hills leading up to Cliveden in the background. Spencer is well known for depicting Cookham making recourse to visions or memories of the location; the expressive features of the work reflect this interest, such as the dappled paint on the surface of the brick wall, as well as the sharp directional paint work of the grass. The landscape is depicted in muted brown tones.
