Manchester Grammar School

Summary

A view of the entrance to Manchester Grammar School on Long Millgate. We look from the cathedral side, past the building designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1873-78, towards the slightly later extension building, designed by Mills and Murgatroyd but since demolished. The clock on the right shows that it is 3.20, and presumably this is home-time for the students, as several young men can be seen to the left with their briefcases. Several cars are parked on the street, The principal subject of the image is the school buildings, which are etched in bold, black, even lines. Above the door to the left can be read, 'SCHOLA MANCUNIENSIS' and above the central door, 'MANCHESTER GRAMMAR SCHOOL'.
