Summary

Portrait of the Reverend John Whitaker (1735-1808), head and shoulders only, set in an oval superimposed on a rectangle. The Reverend wears a short, curled, powdered wig and a high-collared dark coat. He is facing towards the left. His head is set against a shaded background. Whitaker was a historian, who wrote on a history of Manchester, publishing the first volume on Roman Manchester in 1771 and the second on Manchester in Saxon times in 1775.
