The Manchester Royal Infirmary

James Croston 1830 - 1893

Summary

A view looking across at a large classical style building. This is the Manchester Royal Infirmary, since demolished (in 1908-10). One side and the front can be seen. There are entrances on both of these sides, which are gained by going past some tall columns, which are supporting a triangular shaped portico. On the roof is a curved tower with a domed roof. In front of the building are fountains and statues on stone plinths. This dates the image to after 1854, when the pool in front of the Infirmary was replaced by a promenade. Other buildings can be seen on the left and right in the background. People are walking in front of the building. In the forefront, is a cart being pulled by two horses.
