View of Hanover Square and Zoological Gardens, Broughton
Summary
An ariel view of the residential development at Broughton, Salford, Lancashire. Large, comfortable-looking Georgian-style residences border an area of parkland. The edges of this new housing development are softened by a stand of trees and bushes in the left foreground and an expanse of less-landscaped countryside in the distance on the right. The view is of the mansions and villas planned by the architects Hayley and Brown, whose name appears below the image, so it is not certain that all of these buildings were constructed in exactly this way. The estate was developed around Broughton Hall, which can be seen on the left of the middle ground of the image (it is the building with several triangular gables and a walled garden). Part of the development was a zoological garden, which can be seen here in the area towards the right of the image, with its small folly-type buildings and curving paths. The land was developed under the direction of the Revered John Clowes, a fellow of the Collegiate Church of Manchester. The Reverend Clowes' family had acquired the through marriage with the Chetham family in the late eighteenth century. Under Clowes, Broughton became an important and well-to-do suburb of industrial Manchester.
