Cumberland Landscape

Christopher Wood 1901 - Aug 1930

Summary

A stylised landscape view across the Cumberland hills. The sky is overcast, over white mountains in the background. There is a cluster of small white houses in the middle distance to the left. The horizon itself dips down to the right, whilst a grey mountain rises on the left. The colours in the foreground are predominantly green, the forest and marsh area in the middleground are browns. The brush stokes are noticeably large. Christopher Wood first met artists Ben and Winifred Nicholson in 1926. They became close friends and worked together in Cornwall and in Cumberland, where the Nicholsons lived and worked at Bankshead. Through March and April 1928 all three were painting in Cumbria and it is not surprising that their landscapes were very similar. They were all interested in painting in a naive way.
