Marcel and his Sister

William Lionel Clause 1887 - 1946

Summary

A depiction of a young boy and girl (brother and sister), who are sitting in a clearing against a tree beneath its shade, surrounded by woodland. Marcel is wearing blue shorts, a loose, sleeveless, white t-shirt with a wide brimmed hat, and he sits with a knife for peeling their fruit. Marcel's sister is eating a piece of fruit and sits with her right hand resting on a picnic basket. Between the siblings lies a newspaper, on which a selection of fruit has been placed. The foliage behind them is sunlit, with almost tropical colours, and the artist uses daubs of bright, contrasting colours to portray the dappled sunlight.
