He is wearing a high necked shirt and striped braces. There is no background detail. Henry Tonks was both a surgeon and a teacher at the Slade School of Art prior to World War I. He was a civilian doctor in France and Italy during the early war years. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1916 and worked in Sidcup with Sir Harold Gillies, a pioneer of plastic surgery.
