Study for the Oil Painting ' The Storm' (1882.4)

William Etty 1787 - 1849

Summary

A preparatory drawing showing figures in the same position as in the oil painting (1882.4). The semi-nude, kneeling figures of a male and female cling to one another as their small vessel is thrown about by stormy waves. The male, on the left, with the suggestion of drapery over his legs and chest, has one arm bent and held out as if holding an oar, whilst his other arm wraps around the waist of the woman. Both figures turn their heads upwards and to the right. The female figure wraps her arms around the chest and shoulders of the man; her knee on the left is covered with drapery. Drapery billows out behind them. The prow of the vessel tilts upwards, carrying a short mast and sail.
