Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Gerard Ter Borch the Younger. It is a full-length drawing of a man in fashionable clothing and holding a stick. The man is turned slightly towards the left with his left foot pointing forwards and his right foot turned towards the left. He is wearing a tall hat and has shoulder length dark hair. The highlights in white on his clothing suggest it is made from a fine material and he holds some of the fabric from his cape round his torso with his left hand. His right had rests on the tall, thin stick. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 26 GERARD TER BORCH (b. about 1617; d. 1681) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN STANDING, HOLDING A STICK Lately in the posession of Messrs. Obach & Co. Black chalk heightened with white on greenish grey paper. 37.8 x 23.7 cm. (14 7/8 x 9 1/4 in.). A young man in tall broad-brimmed hat, elegantly attired, stands nearly in full face, with his right hand resting on a stick and his left on his breast, holding up his mantle, which falls across his left shoulder. His sleeves and the skirt of his doublet are slashed, and his breeches are tied with bows at the knees. The general scheme of postrait is like many of Ter Borch's paintings (e. g. No 1399 in the National Gallery), but we are unable to connect it with any particular work. A. M. H."
