Andrea Sarto

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Andrea del Sarto. The drawing shows a donkey grazing. It is facing towards the left with its right front foot forwards and its head is lowered to the ground. There is a saddle on its back, which is fastened by ties under the body and below the tail. The original drawing was in red chalk. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 2 ANDREA DEL SARTO (b. 1486; d. 1531) AN ASS BROWSING British Museum, Fawkener 5211-19. Red chalk. 16.9 x 19.3 cm. (6 5/8 x 7 5/8 in.). This is a separate study from life, in the characteristic red chalk manner of Andrea del Sarto, of an ass browsing without bridle or halter, but with his pack-saddle still girt. The study was made and used for the picture of Abraham's Sacrifice (about 1530) now in the Dresden Gallery (No. 77) S. C."
