Peeling Potatoes

Randolph Schwabe 1885 - 1948

Summary

In this print the composition is centred upon the solitary figure of a woman. She is depicted sitting down in a long dress with her knees bent and her back hunched forwards as she concentrates on peeling some potatoes. She is looking down at her hands as they peel a potato, holding it in her left hand with the knife in her right hand. The rest of the potatoes are in a bowl at her feet. Her figure appears almost sculptural as the modelling has strong contrasts between light and dark that emphasise the form of her body, picking out details like her collarbone and the folds in her dress.
