Calvary

Adam Elsheimer

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Adam Elsheimer. The sketch shows three erect crosses, one central and one at an angle either side of this, each with a figure hanging from it. There is a dense crowd gathered on the ground around the crosses, and some arms are raised in the air. In front of the crowd, to the right, is a man on horseback. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "16. ADAM ELSHEIMER (b. 1578; d. 1620) CALVARY Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Bequeathed to the University by the Rev. Robert Finch, 1830. Pen and brush drawing in Indian ink and bistre on white paper, heightened with white. 12.2 x 10.4 cm. (4 13/16 x 4 1/16 in.). A striking anticipation of the manner of Rembrandt. C. D."
