Summary

The figure of a bearded man is at the centre of the image. A sword is issuing from this man's mouth and there is a ring of stars around his head. To the bottom left is the kneeling figure of a young man with curly hair. These figures are surrounded by seven ornate candlesticks.

The Vision of Saint John and the Seven Candlesticks 1498 Albrecht Durer 1471-1528 Woodcut Durer exploited the full potential of the woodcut in designs such as this, for his Apocalypse of 1498. He eliminated the separation of outline and shading, that had been typical in traditional woodcut design, to create sophisticated and dynamic images.
