The Vision of Saint John and the Seven Candlesticks 1498 Albrecht Durer 1471-1528 Woodcut Durer exploited the full potential of the woodcut in designs such as this, for his Apocalypse of 1498. He eliminated the separation of outline and shading, that had been typical in traditional woodcut design, to create sophisticated and dynamic images. Printing a woodcut is relatively quick and simple, making such a large design commercially viable. Thomas Balston Bequest 1968.93
