Summary
Bust of woman facing left and looking out at the observer, She wears an elaborate bonnet tied under the chin. A coat covers her high-necked dress. Enclosed in an oval frame. A portrait of Elizabeth Gunning (1733-1790) a society hostess and Lady of the Bedchamber of Queen Charlotte from 1761-1784. Following the death in 1758 of her first husband the Duke of Hamilton, she married John Campbell, later the Duke of Argyll. Along with her sister Maria, she was very much a celebrity of her day who took London society by storm and attracted large crowds wherever she went.
