Cottages in the Cotswold Hills

Cottages in the Cotswold Hills

James Bateman 1893 - 1959

Summary

A landscape painting where three cottages are depicted amidst a country-side background comprising of fields in warm yellow ochre, and various shades of green from moss coloured to a more vibrant turquoise-green. The grey and beige cottages are bathed in sunlight on their far side only, indicating a mid-afternoon sun. Three horses are depicted grazing in the foreground. The stroke of the paintbrush is visible as the artist has chosen to paint the landscape in a loose style. Varying tones are depicted, but the artist has tended to use block colour rather than focus on detail.
