Conishead Priory

Conishead Priory

Summary

Near Ulverston. This mansion, which is in the Elizabethan style, formerly belonged to the Braddyll family. It stands on the site of an ancient Priory, founded in the reign of Henry II by Gamel de Penningtion, assisted by the first Baron of Kendal, William de Taillebois. It was originally designed as a hospital for the poor of Ulverston, under the charge of the monks of the order of St. Augustine. The gardens and conservatories are exceedingly fine; and the view from the wooded hill at the back of the hall of the sylvan scenery of Conishead Park, and the wide expanse of Morecambe Bay, is most charming. The house is at present unfortunately unoccupied, with a prospect of being pulled down. The Park is already partly let off for building purposes.
