Out Tide

David Jones 1895 - 1974

Summary

Thinly painted seascape painted in an expressive style; the viewer is positioned looking across the water towards a pier jutting out from the shore in the far distance. Tones of brown, green and grey are used to represent the seascape and surrounding pier, coastal cottages and debris. The tide appears to be out and thus the expanse of beach is visible with wooden posts exposed. The sky is stormy and represented in a dark grey colour. To the right of the painting there is a door-like structure, suggesting the painter may have been in a beach house location whilst painting the scene.
