An Aran Landscape (Inishmore)

John Bold 1895 - 1979

Summary

Undulating landscape of ploughed fields, parallel plough lines run into the depth of the picture plane towards a small group of buildings huddled together in the middle ground. The sky contains very low clouds painted in heavy grey tones; the weight of these clouds is accentuated by their dramatic dark shadows. A dry stone wall extends from the left to the right of the picture. The scene is semi-surreal which is communicated through the abstract soft, curvaceous shapes accentuated within the landscape and high contrast afforded by the tonal variations. The hills drop away behind, and there is a flat horizon in the distance.
