(on mount) "THROSTLES NEST/ B. 1729 ANTHONY T. DEVIS D. 1817" Anthony Devis was born in Preston in 1729. He lived at Albury House near Guildford from 1780 until his death in 1817 where he drew extensively in the grounds of the house. His mushroom-shaped painting studio on top of the hill at Albury was known as Mushroom Hall.
