Dinner Time

Edward Melcarth 1914 - 1973

Summary

Domestic scene of a family at dinner time in a long, low-roofed room with bare walls and floorboards. The room opens onto an expanse of water with hills in the distance and a moored rowing boat by the door. A long rectangular dining table, partially covered with a white cloth and crockery, runs the length of the room; a family surround the table, some sitting, others standing. A young woman stands with her back to the table on left by an overturned chair, facing the viewer, whilst another sits away from the table on the far right, knitting. In the left corner of the room, a shelf is visible on the wall below a small square window; pans hang from the shelf and the room is otherwise undecorated.
