James Fitton 1899 - 1982

Summary

A poster proof before letters of a circus scene depicting a clown riding a bicycle across a tightrope. The image was used by London Transport for the poster 'It's Safer by'. It was intended to encourage travel during quieter off peak times such as evenings and at the weekend. The poster was designed for display inside Underground trains. During the 1930s, circuses were a popular form of family entertainment. James Fitton attended evening classes at Manchester School of Art where he was taught by artist Adolphe Valette. Fitton was a fellow student of LS Lowry. He left Manchester for London in 1921 and worked as a printer and commercial artist. He studied the printing technique lithography in 1937 after which he was commissioned by Frank Pick to design two posters for London Transport. See 1938.108.
