Lancashire Authors: Ben Brierley and Mrs. Gaskell

Summary

Two images of 'LANCASHIRE AUTHORS' mounted together in 1925 for displays at the educational Horsfall Museum, Ancoats, Manchester. The first is a picture of Ben Brierley (1825-1896), taken from a 1925 newspaper. The text on the mount explains that 'he is representing one of his characters': Brierley is dressed in a smock and jacket, and sits on a wooden chair with comically splayed knees. Below is an image of Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865), taken from the original by George Richmond. This is a page of a history book or magazine, with images of the Gaskells' stone memorial tablets on the reverse. Information on the mount below the imagee refers to Gaskell's novel 'Cranford' and where she lived, in Knutsford and Manchester.
