John Byrom

Summary

A reproduction of an engraving of John Byrom (1692-1763), poet and teacher of shorthand. The portrait is bust-length, and shows Byrom in a long curling wig and a clerical four-cornered cap and gown. The image has an arched top and a coat-of-arms beneath. The coat-of-arms has three hedgehogs in a shield, with a hedgehog on top. A facsimile of the sitter's signature is below the image. This object is a page taken from 'The Royal Exchange Assurance Magazine', and on the reverse is an image of a page of a manuscript by John Byrom, from the original text of his book 'Christians Awake,' held at Chetham's Library, Manchester.
