Summary
Half-length portrait of a seated man. He is facing right but looking contempletatively at the viewer. He is holding a book in his left hand and resting his right arm on the chair back. Charles Cross was the Boroughreeve of Manchester (its chief municipal officer) in 1828. This picture is annotated in pencil as being after Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823), and as being the work of Frank Stone (1800-1859), but these attributions have not been confirmed.
