John Dalton
Summary
A portrait of Manchester scientist John Dalton (1766–1844). Dalton is shown in profile facing left, and almost in caricature, his old age revealed by a toothless jawline, and his spectacles resting half way down his nose. He is inspecting the contents of a scientific glass, which he holds up to his eye level: this absorbs him utterly. He wears a close-fitting cap, a jacket and neck cloth.
