North East View of the Infirmary, Manchester.
Summary
View looking at the front and side of a large stone building: this is Manchester Royal Infirmary when it occupied the site that in the twentieth century became Piccadilly Gardens. On the front can be seen the main entrance, which has six, tall, fluted columns with scrolled tops, supporting a triangular pediment. On the right can be seen a smaller portico, with just four columns. In the foreground, people can be seen walking along the pavement next to a long pool. The public baths - a smaller building in the style of a Greek temple - can be seen to the right of the image, and large warehouse-type buildings are on the horizon, beyond the hospital ground This lithograph is in poor condition, and it is difficult to tell whether it has been overprinted in a shade of beige to add depth to the image, or whether this beige colour is acidification of the paper. Some of the clothing of the promenaders has beeen hand-coloured.
